Chapter Fourteen

Colonel Fitzwilliam passed the note to Darcy, watching his alarm grow.

“I apologise, Lord Darlington, an urgent matter requires my immediate attention.” Darcy rose from the chair, placing the fine cigar and snifter of rare brandy on the side table.

“No, no.” Darlington walked the younger men to the door. “As my visit was unexpected, I shall take my leave, with your promise to join me, along with your ladies, at Heatherton.”

Darcy bowed.

“Thank you for the invitation,” Colonel Fitzwilliam said. “I shall convey your best wishes to my father and mother.”

“Excellent. Rumour has it that you have captured a beauty, Darcy, and a vivacious one at that.”

“Mrs Darcy is a beautiful woman,” Darcy agreed, unhappy to delay their departure. “But her appeal extends beyond her appearance. You may even find yourself charmed when you witness her wit.”

Colonel Fitzwilliam added, “Undoubtedly.”

“Then I double my plea. Surely you cannot deny an old man the few true pleasures remaining to him.”

“We would not suspend any pleasure of yours, sir.” Darcy looked fondly at the friend of his late father.

“Smart lad. Now, be about your urgent business. Must not keep the ladies waiting.”

Darcy left the colonel to see their guest to his carriage.
